Employment for 2 100 young people

4 300 new jobs, half of them for young people. Better occupational safety and health care at more than 3 450 workplaces. In Zambia, the green economy programme of five UN organizations created decent jobs and sustainable business in the country’s rapidly growing construction sector between 2013 and 2017.

Work and diversification of the economy are needed. Population growth in Zambia is among the fastest in the world and more than half the population are young people. The economy largely revolves around the mining industry and is highly dependent on the market price of copper. The programme, which was supported by Finland, strengthened the competitiveness of construction companies and created environmentally friendly building materials and working methods. Environmental and decent work requirements are a consideration in new jobs. Social security was part of the employment relationships, labour laws were reformed and occupational safety and health care were improved.
