In May 2016, celebrations took place in Nepal. On that day, two years had passed since a rhino was last killed by poachers in the country. The Nepalese government, WWF and other organizations, village communities, the police and the army have been working to combat poaching for many years. In Nepal, efforts to reduce poaching have produced results during a relatively short period of time. For example, as recently as 2002, a total of 37 rhinos were killed by poachers.

As a result of the efforts, Nepal now has a rhino population of about 650. This is 75 per cent more than ten years ago. The conservation work also benefits local residents. Boasting a well-managed environment, the region attracts tourists who bring revenue and sustainable livelihood for local people. WWF protects rhinos with the development cooperation funding of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
