What will the future of Iraq look like after the retreat of the Isis terrorist organisation? Will violence erupt once again between different groups after the common enemy has been vanquished? The Crisis Management Initiative CMI, which Finland supports from its development cooperation funds, helped Iraqi people on the road to peace from 2014 to 2017. Since 2014, the CMI has assisted Iraq in developing a strategy that aims to bring reconciliation between different groups. This strategy for national reconciliation consists of a set of reforms that help to make Iraq a country governed by the rule of law. The CMI has paved the way for permanent peace together with the Iraqi state leaders.
“The goal is to make every citizen equal before the law. This is the way to build peace in a country such as Iraq,” says the CMI’s Project Manager for Iraq Hussein al-Taee.
